Nathan Patterson wants to leave Everton on loan in search of first-team football with a potential return to Rangers on the cards, the Daily Mail reports.

According to the news outlet’s website [12 December], the 23-year-old is eager to receive a call-up to the Scotland squad for 2025’s World Cup qualifiers and believes a temporary exit from Goodison Park will help him achieve his goal.

Despite reports claiming Everton would not entertain offers north of the border, the door remains open for the full-back once hailed as a “diamond” to revive his stalled career at his boyhood club.

However, Rangers will face stiff competition for his signature, with several Championship outfits interested in securing his services.

Patterson’s situation at Everton is baffling, considering he has failed to garner the trust of Sean Dyche throughout his three years on Merseyside.

While he has endured his injury concerns at the Blues, he finds himself firmly behind 36-year-old Seamus Coleman and 39-year-old Ashley Young in the pecking order even when fit.

However, those who still believe he has a long-term future at Goodison Park will be relieved to hear the Blues are open to sending the right-back to Rangers, where he will be playing regular Scottish Premiership and Europa League football.

A move to the Championship, excluding the likes of Leeds United, would be counter-productive as his ability to succeed in the Premier League cannot be determined via a loan spell in the English second tier.

Therefore, the Scotland international is best served to return to where his career began to help rediscover his form and return to Everton at the end of the season, ready to lay down a statement for a first-team berth.
