“It’s been frustrating” - Micah Richards says he feels ‘sorry’ for Arsenal star who looks like shadow of his best self

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards feels sorry for Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus following his recent struggles. The Brazilian has failed to live up to expectations since arriving at the Emirates from Manchester City in the summer of 2022.

Jesus earned a rare start for the north London side on Wednesday, December 11, against Monaco in the Champions League. He missed two golden opportunities but set up Bukayo Saka's opening goal as the Gunners picked up a 3-0 win.

Speaking after the game on The Rest is Football podcast, Richards lauded Jesus' work rate.

“I thought Jesus did quite well as well. Not in terms of like putting his chances away, but in terms of work rate," said Richards.

Gary Lineker then pointed out that the Brazilian was out of luck in front of the goal.

“He just can’t get himself a goal, can he? Just can’t get himself a goal,” said Lineker.

Richards also acknowledged that Jesus is a shadow of his former self.

"You feel so sorry for him, but the work that he puts in for the team was brilliant and has been brilliant," said Richards.

He continued:

“I know he started so well. It’s been frustrating. He got the injury, he came back from the injury. He’s been a shadow of the player, but a lot of the good work with Arsenal comes from his hard work, and he got his assist. So, I was happy for him.”

Jesus has registered just one goal and two assists from 19 games across competitions for Arsenal this season.

Arsenal have been in fine form this season in the Champions League. The Gunners have won four of their six games so far, losing just once.

Mikel Arteta's team have scored 11 goals and conceded two, and are third in the European table. With two games remaining in the league stage, the north London side are expected to make it to the knockouts without any problems.

Arsenal are in the race for the Premier League title as well. The Gunners are third in the league table after 15 matches, six points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

Arteta narrowly missed out on the league title over the last two seasons and will be determined to make amends this year. The north London side next face Everton at the Emirates on Saturday, December 14.
