There’s been a lot of talk among Sunderland fans about Jack Clarke of late. Now after Tommy Watson’s recent injury blow, there’s even more.
It’s fair to say that Jack Clarke‘s summer move to Ipswich Town hasn’t panned out how he nor anyone else might have thought it would.
He’s goalless in 13 Premier League games for the Tractor Boys and Ipswich Town fans have voiced concerns about Clarke’s performances so far this season.
Sunderland fans will always have a soft spot for Clarke, so to see him struggling so much and receiving the criticism that he is, is tough.
But BBC pundit Kieron Brady thinks there’s an element of irony in all of this: Sunderland fans and likely club officials were wondering how they’d replace Clarke, and in the end they had two viable replacements in Romaine Mundle and Tommy Watson.
What’s ironic though, is that both players are now injured and unavailable for Regis Le Bris.

Kieron Brady’s ‘ironic’ Jack Clarke claim at Sunderland as Tommy Watson injury confirmed
Speaking to the press on Thursday, Le Bris confirmed that Sunderland ace Watson is injured for up to two months after suffering ankle and knee damage in the last outing against Bristol City.
Thankfully, though, Mundle is expected back for Sunderland in the coming weeks and so Le Bris will soon have one of his star left-wingers back.
MORE SUNDERLAND STORIES
Speaking on Total Sport recently, Brady highlighted the irony in all of this, before also reminding fans that the transfer window is just around the corner.
He said: “It’s ironic in a sense, when you think of the reservations that many fans had about replacing Jack Clarke.
“We had Romaine Mundle come in, and looked to be fulfilling that particular role. Then of course, he’s been beset by injuries.
“And now, when Tommy Watson looks as of he could come in and prove and adequate replacement for Mundle’s absence, it’s him now that’s fallen victim to it.
“But I suppose the one consolation in all of this – and it wouldn’t just be unique to that particular position or predicament – is that the re-opening of the transfer window is just several weeks away.”
What Regis Le Bris has said about the left-wing position ahead of Swansea City
On Saturday, Sunderland travel to Swansea City. Once again, there’ll be changes to Le Bris’ XI, though they’re very much forced changes.
Speaking to the press, Le Bris explained how he’ll replace Watson in the Sunderland XI, saying: “We’ll find a solution. We don’t have a choice.
“Because we have many young players, we know that we can discover many things. We’ll have to find new solutions. We’ll see for Swansea.”
It looks like that Eliezer Mayenda will come in and start on one flank, and Patrick Roberts on the other, so for Sunderland, there’s good replacements.
But not having either Watson or Mundle for a handful of games is a blow for sure.
