United to offer "very valuable" defender new deal to keep Real Madrid at bay - report

Manchester United are reportedly not planning to sell Lisandro Martinez and in fact, are preparing to offer him a new deal.

The Argentine signed for £48.5 million from Ajax in 2022 and was fantastic in his first season. His second season was plagued by injury however but he seems to have overcome these issues in this campaign.

Martinez has been a regular feature in Ruben Amorim’s back three, playing 20 games this season in all competitions.

The Red Devils’ recent struggles with PSR mean that reportedly the majority of the squad is up for sale and there have been rumours that Martinez might be one such player .

Consequently, there have been recent links to Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be in the mix.

Nonetheless, CaughtOffside sources claim that this information is not accurate and that the fan favourite is actually one of the few players the club is keen to hold on to.

The outlet claims that “despite intense interest from PSG and Real Madrid, Manchester United are planning to extend the contract of Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez rather than sell him.”

Allegedly both Madrid and PSG are preparing offers for the defender and this has sparked United into action, with his current deal ending in 2027.

The outlet claims that a well-placed source told them, ‘Lisandro is a very valuable player for our team. We have long-term plans for him and we aim to realise them by extending his contract.’

There is also “no indication” that Martinez plans to leave the club and he has always spoken glowingly of his time in Manchester.

Nonetheless, CaughtOffside do warn that Madrid are a very hard prospect to turn down, especially for South American players.

However, with Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof all likely to leave the club in the summer, it would make sense that the Red Devils would aim to tie down Martinez to a long-term deal.
