Callum Wilson, Joe Willock, Nick Pope: Newcastle United injury latest and potential return dates

It’s already been a tough season on the injury front for Newcastle United and they have suffered yet more big blows this week.

It’s not been a great start to the campaign for Newcastle United, with excellent performances against Premier League title challengers being followed up with dropped points to relegation-threatened sides.

Though the Magpies haven’t been as hit badly as some other sides, injuries have still been a mitigating factor, with Eddie Howe not once having a fully fit squad to choose from even once.

Newcastle take on Leicester City on Saturday as they bid to win their first match in five ahead of Wednesday’s massive Carabao Cup quarter-final against Brentford.

Here is the latest news and possible return dates for Newcastle’s six injured players.

Nick Pope has been dealing with a knee injury this week and though a specialist is assessing the knock on Friday, he is still in contention to play against Leicester if it turns out not to be anything serious.

Latest update: Howe said on December 13: “He’s carried a knee injury this week. Initially we thought it was nothing but he’s seeking some specialist treatment.”

Potential return date: December 14, vs Leicester City

Callum Wilson already missed the first three months of the season with a back problem and made just four appearances off the bench before suffering his latest setback.

Wilson took to social media on Thursday to reveal he would have to take a ‘little step backwards’ on his road to full fitness in a ‘frustrating’ blow.

Howe has confirmed the veteran striker has suffered yet another hamstring injury and is set for a significant spell on the sidelines.

Latest update: Howe said on December 13: “I really feel for Callum because we see the work, the dedication, the professionalism that he’s shown, not just in the recovery from this injury, but throughout his career.

“To me he’s an inspirational player and I think when you’re in these moments for him, you have to understand how difficult this season has been for him.

“There’s been a couple of setbacks when he’s looked like he’s so close to training and playing regularly and building that resilience that his body needs to perform at this level. He has not cut corners, he’s gone through a vigorous process to try and keep himself fit.

“I think when you care as much as Callum does, and he cares about himself, of course, but he cares about the team and the club and his team mates. He’s desperate to perform and he’s desperate to contribute.

“And when you’re not able to do that because of your body, that’s a very emotional thing. I’ve seen the pain that this moment’s given him but I think that just fuels him.

“I think it gives him extra motivation to try and come back and to try and contribute in the way that he wants to because he’s such an important player for us we’ve missed a massively.”

Potential return date: Unkown.

Jamaal Lascelles is another defender who has been out for months with a serious knee injury but it appears the captain is not as close to a return as Botman is.

Latest update: Lascelles told the Shields Gazette in October: ‘I should be back on the grass soon and jogging in the next few weeks.

“It’ll take me a while to build up from there, but I’m happy to be ticking those boxes, and now it’s about getting my boots back on and progressing slowly that way.”

Emil Krafth suffered a broken collarbone in training ahead of the November international break that is set to keep him out of action for the rest of 2024.

Latest update: Howe said on November 22: “Emil has had an operation.

“We anticipate he’s going to be out for six to eight weeks. It’s a big blow to us to lose Emil who has been such a consistent performer.”
