Tottenham backed to land Bournemouth star worth £50m; January deal difficult

Bournemouth defender Illia Zabaryni has been linked with a move to Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have simply not been good enough this season and rightly find themselves in 11th position in the Premier League.

The 4-3 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday left the Lilywhites seven points off fourth place. After beating Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium, they have dropped points since against Fulham, Bournemouth and Chelsea in the Premier League.

Ange Postecoglou did enjoy a productive summer transfer window that saw the club bring in players such as Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert while re-signing Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig. However, with the Spurs boss struggling to get consistent results, thanks majorly to several injury problems, the club are planning to invest in the January transfer window.

Big Ange has lost Cristian Romero to a quad injury for six weeks.

Recent injuries to Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies have left Postecoglou with just one fit central defender in Radu Dragusin. Due to a lack of options presently, Tottenham want to sign a central defender next month. Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi has emerged as one of the targets.

Spurs are planning to make a £50m move to secure the Ukrainian international’s signature, although it would not be easy to prise him away from Bournemouth given how important a player he has become under Andoni Iraola.

Illia Zabarnyi has grown in stature in the last 12-15 months, establishing himself as a reliable central defender in the Premier League. The 22-year-old has played every minute of the ongoing Premier League campaign, helping Iraola’s side beat the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham at home.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson thinks Bournemouth would be open to selling Zabarnyi next year amid links with the North London club. The English pundit has been impressed with the defender after watching him live this season. He feels the Ukrainian is a ‘top-quality defender’ and would ‘enhance any Premier League team’.

“Zabarnyi is a top player and if Spurs were interested in him, there would be other Premier League clubs interested. He’s a top, top-quality defender, who I’ve seen first-hand at Bournemouth this season,” Paul Robinson exclusively told Tottenham News.

“It’s only his second season in the Premier League but he’s already got that experience. Bournemouth won’t stand in his way – they’ve proven that before. If there is Champions League football on offer, there’s a deal to be done.

“Newcastle are looking at him. I think Zabarnyi will move on from Bournemouth but it’s a tough deal to do in January. He will enhance any Premier League team. He has 40-odd caps for Ukraine already.

“He’s a clever football and I have no doubt, whether it be Tottenham or another team in England, that he will move on in the summer.”

Big Ange definitely needs a bit of help as far as options in central defence are concerned. Dragusin being the only fit centre-back at his disposal tells the state Spurs are in now. With games coming thick and fast, it will be difficult for the towering Romanian to play in every competition without any rest continuously.

Thus, the addition of a central defender is a must and Zabarnyi would be a good fit at White Hart Lane. However, considering his value to Iraola’s team and interest from other Premier League clubs, a January deal would be difficult for Tottenham to do.
