‘Special talent’ has just been offered a new contract as Newcastle eye move

Newcastle United’s pursuit of a right winger is fairly well documented.

Indeed, the club have failed to strengthen there since the PIF takeover back in October 2021, albeit there are reasons for that.

Newcastle, of course, had plenty of other areas in which to buy players. The form of Miguel Almiron then lessened the need for a new signing there, albeit that has now tailed off. And then some.

Anthony Gordon and Joelinton offer alternatives in that position but moving either of those there is hardly ideal, given their best performances have come on the left wing and in central midfield respectively.

Jacob Murphy is a man Eddie Howe has frequently spoken fondly of but surely few would doubt the club could purchase an upgrade on the forward without necessarily having to buy the very best in Europe.

That’s not to criticise Murphy but it’s hard to imagine many onlookers believing he’d still be a regular option for the Newcastle United manager three years into the PIF project.

Brentford’s Byran Mbeumo has been linked but the club are understood to know doing a deal with the Bees will be difficult. PSV’s Johan Bakayoko is another touted as a target but the Dutch club reportedly want to keep him in January.

Another Premier League-based player has also been linked with a move to St James’ Park. Southampton’s breakout young star Tyler Dibling – hailed as a “special talent” by Saints boss Russell Martin – has been touted as a target.

Still, rival clubs have also been credited with an interest in the 18-year-old.

Now, Martin has confirmed the latest on his future.

Contract now sent to Newcastle transfer target but agent disagrees

Martin confirmed the south coast club had offered Dibling – whose current deal expires in 2027 – an improved contract but also added the player’s agent has been complicating the talks.

“We have offered him a contract, a really good contract for someone his age,” he said (via Sky Sports).

“At the minute, I don’t think his agent agrees, so that’s where we’re at.

“I think Tyler wants it done, I think Tyler’s parents want it done, so we’ll see how long that takes.

“There is an option. We can extend. I don’t think we want to do that – we want to reward Tyler for his performances.

“I’ve spoken to Tyler’s mum and dad about it, I’ve spoken to Tyler, but then I’m not involved in any of the negotiations – that’s down to Phil [Parsons, chief executive] and the gang, the owners and Tyler’s agent – and that’s where it gets tricky.”

Newcastle have wanted to sign Tyler Dibling for years

Newcastle’s interest in the forward, who has been a shining light for the Saints during an otherwise difficult season with one goal and two assists in 14 Premier League games, dates back to 2022.

Reports back then suggested they were interested in the teenager following his performances in the Southampton academy, which included scoring a hat-trick against Newcastle’s U23s that year.
