Manchester United handed major Jeremie Frimpong transfer update after talks held

Jeremie Frimpong is reportedly flagging up interest from Liverpool.

Liverpool are reportedly talking to Jeremie Frimpong's agent, Dirk Hebel, after Manchester United held talks with the player's representatives themselves last summer.

The Manchester Evening News reported in April that United were keen on signing the Manchester City Academy graduate. Then-manager Erik ten Hag was said to be a fan of his countryman - when intent on signing a new right-back to compete with Diogo Dalot.

Frimpong extended his contract with Bayer Leverkusen six months later until the summer of 2028, though, to the exact date Dalot also penned his own extension last year. United have since sold Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham United and signed Noussair Mazraoui from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

However, the whispers over Frimpong's future continue. Liverpool, though, are said to be showing interest now, with Trent Alexander-Arnold approaching the final six months of his contract at Anfield.

BILD's Christian Falk claims - in a column with Caught Offside - that the player's agent attended their Champions League match at Anfield with Frimpong's Leverkusen after being invited by the hosts. The player reputedly has a £33million release clause in his new contract with the Premier League table-toppers said to be working on a deal.

United did not necessarily need another right-back after signing Mazraoui to replace Wan-Bissaka, but new head coach Ruben Amorim prefers the defender to play as a right-sided centre-back. That meant Amad and Dalot have been playing as a right-wing-back over recent weeks, but they have yet to play there extensively throughout their careers. Contrastingly, Frimpong is a regular in that role for Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso.

United could conceivably revive their interest should Amorim deem he needs a more natural right-wing-back in his system. However, it now appears they face competition from Liverpool for Frimpong, who now have a Dutch head coach in Arne Slot, as United did when talks with Frimpong's representatives took place last year.
