Newcastle have been below par in 2024/25 and that could explain why talisman, Bruno Guimaraes, is open to a move to Man City as early as January.

The Brazilian has only recently signed a new long-term deal with the Magpies but was furious with the performance from his team-mates during the recent defeat against Brentford.

Pep Guardiola has urged his paymasters to sign the midfielder as a replacement for Rodri, with the Spaniard at least six months away from being fit enough to play again.

Intriguingly, The Times (subscription required) have reported that Guimaraes is open to the move to the reigning Premier League champions, even as early as the upcoming January transfer window.

With the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules still biting clubs hard, the Magpies may finally have to accept the inevitable and sell one of their bigger names in order to be able to not only stay on the right side of FFP, but also to strengthen other areas of the squad.

Arguably there is no bigger name in the current Newcastle squad than Guimaraes, and his sale, were it to happen, would send a message to the Toon Army.

A message that every club, no matter how much money their owners have, still need to fall in line.

After the takeover by PIF and subsequent uplift in every aspect at the club, there appeared to be a genuine feeling that Newcastle were on the cusp of something special.

The win over Paris Saint-Germain has, for now, turned out to be the high point, and that could also explain why Guimaraes, so often the hero for the Geordie masses, is finally considering moving on to pastures new.
