'People joke': Chris Sutton baffled by what he's been hearing about Arsenal lately

Arsenal are doing very well at the minute as they remain firmly in the Premier League title picture and are also excelling in the Champions League.

Optimism is high around the Emirates Stadium as the Gunners seek to finally get their rewards after the rebuilding job they’ve carried out in the past five years.

Arsenal have improved with each passing season and they now look like they could very much go all the way in the Premier League title race.

Chris Sutton has now spoken about something the Gunners are doing that others have joked about but he thinks is an additional “feather in their cap”.

Chris Sutton hails Arsenal set-piece prowess amid criticism

This season, Arsenal have really upped their set-piece game and are getting plenty of goals from corners and free kicks.

While this is very effective and has contributed to the Gunners’ impressive start to the season, others have not been so impressed.

For instance, Tottenham and Manchester United cult hero Dimitar Berbatov described Arsenal as “the new Stoke City” earlier this month.

However, Sutton seems baffled by the criticism the Gunners have been copping for something that is now making them even more dangerous to face.

The pundit wrote about Arsenal on BBC Sport as he looked back to the win over Fulham ahead of the Gunners facing Everton this weekend.

“Martin Odegaard was not as influential as usual, and it showed (against Fulham), but the Gunners were still a threat from set-pieces, which is how they got their goal,” wrote Sutton.

“People joke about how Arsenal are like Tony Pulis’ old Stoke City side in that respect, but I see their ability to score from corners as being a feather in their cap rather than something to sneer at.

“The Gunners are definitely more pragmatic this season but fair play to them for being so effective at set-pieces – a few other teams must wish they carried the same level of threat in those situations.”

Sutton also said he can’t see the Gunners slipping up against Everton on Saturday, backing them to run out 2-0 winners over Sean Dyche’s charges.

“Sean Dyche’s side will sit in and they don’t mind a set-piece either, so this could be a battle of who is better at corners, but I’d back Arsenal to come out on top,” he said.

Arsenal’s Premier League meeting with Everton at the Emirates Stadium is scheduled to kick off at 3pm GMT on Saturday 14 December.
