Joe Gomez has revealed he was close to leaving Liverpool in the summer after attracting interest from Newcastle United.

Newcastle were just days away from breaching Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) before raising the necessary funds via the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh for a combined £63million to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively.

That allowed the Magpies to pull the plug on selling any of their star players, including Anthony Gordon. As per The Athletic, United considered selling the former Everton man to Liverpool for £75m, which would have resulted in Gomez moving in the opposite direction for £45m.

The saga has since been put to bed with Gordon penning a new long-term contract at St James’ Park, while Gomez is enjoying a run in Arne Slot’s starting XI. However, it wasn’t until after the Reds’ 1-0 against Girona in midweek where Gomez spoke about the summer for the first time.

“Yeah, it was definitely for real,” Gomez told The Athletic. “But my focus was always on the club. I know how blessed I am to be here. It will be 10 years next summer. I don’t take that for granted.

“It is the best club in the world in my eyes and (after the transfer didn’t happen) it was quickly a case of adapting and getting right back into the swing of things.

“It was quickly put to bed. That’s football. I am a big believer in focusing on the present. To be somewhere nearly 10 years and not have any blips would not be natural, which probably speaks about my ambition.”
