Bukayo Saka has expressed his confidence in the potential of Myles Lewis-Skelly after the 18-year-old delivered a standout performance on his full Champions League debut for Arsenal. The Hale End Academy graduate was thrust into the starting lineup against Monaco at the Emirates Stadium, stepping up in the midst of Arsenal’s ongoing defensive injury crisis.
Despite his limited experience, Lewis-Skelly showcased composure beyond his years, including a crucial pass that set up Gabriel Jesus for the opening goal in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory. The young midfielder’s assured display earned praise from Saka, who also graduated from the club’s academy.
“His future is very bright,” the 23-year-old told TNT Sports. “He just needs to keep the same head that he’s got. His mentality is top-notch—he’s always asking questions and looking to learn.

“I just said to him, like I did before the game, that this is his level. He needs to have no doubts about his confidence and what he’s doing in training. I was pleased with him. He was a big part of the first goal, and I’m so proud of him.”

Lewis-Skelly’s start against Monaco marked just his third for the Gunners, having previously featured twice in the Carabao Cup. Mikel Arteta’s decision to select him over experienced options like Scotland international Kieran Tierney reflects the high regard the club holds for the youngster.

The teenager was substituted shortly after the hour mark for Jurrien Timber, but with injuries to Riccardo Calafiori, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Ben White, and Takehiro Tomiyasu, Lewis-Skelly is expected to receive more opportunities in the coming weeks.
Arsenal’s dominant win against Monaco leaves them third in the Champions League’s new 36-team league format, with the top eight teams earning automatic qualification to the Round of 16.
Next, the Gunners turn their focus to domestic competitions. They host Everton at the Emirates on Saturday in the Premier League before facing Crystal Palace twice next week—first at home in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals and then in a league clash at Selhurst Park.
