How Aston Villa Have Lined-up Recently

Aston Villa lined up for their match against RB Leipzig on Tuesday with a mostly full-strength side, missing only Jacob Ramsey and Leon Bailey. They set up against the Germans in their regular 4-2-3-1 formation with Emi Martinez in goal, a back four of Ezri Konsa, Diego Carlos, Pau Torres and Lucas Digne, two defensive midfielders in Youri Tielemans and Boubacar Kamara and an attacking four of Matty Cash – deputising for Bailey on the right -, Morgan Rogers, John McGinn and Ollie Watkins up top.

Villa’s 3-2 victory over Leipzig was their third consecutive win in all competitions since losing 3-0 to Chelsea on Dec 1, and they were certainly made to work for it. They went a goal up early on through John McGinn, however a misjudgement from Martinez following a long ball saw Lois Openda swoop in to equalise midway through the first half.

Jhon Duran was introduced at half time for Watkins and gave Villa the lead not long after the restart, catching Peter Gulacsi off his line to score from 25 yards, before Christoph Baumgartner levelled for Leipzig. A late deflected Ross Barkley strike saw Unai Emery’s side end up with the three points.

Following the first Leipzig goal, Villa looked rocked but managed to weather the storm and come out unscathed, a result which sent them 5th in the Champions League table. This means that a Matchday 7 win against Monaco on January 21 would see them book their place in the last 16 of the competition.

Aston Villa Injuries to Consider

Jacob Ramsey remains out with a hamstring injury that he picked up against Liverpool before the November international break, while Watkins is being assessed for a small injury after leaving the field at halftime on Tuesday against Leipzig. Bailey is another waiting on a green light for the weekend as he missed the game in midweek after also suffering a hamstring injury on December 7 against Southampton.
