Fantasy Premier League: The new Assistant Manager chip explained

Fantasy Premier League has finally revealed the Mystery Chip they have been teasing for months.

Chips have become an integral part of FPL in recent years, giving managers the opportunity to maximise their points by using the Triple Captain, Free Hit, Bench Boost and a second Wildcards during the season.

The latest one to be thrown in the mix is the Assistant Manager chip, unveiled earlier this week. But what is it? And how does it work?

Fantasy Premier League: The new Assistant Manager chip explained

What is the Assistant Manager chip?

It allows you to add one of the 20 Premier League managers to your FPL squad and earn points based on their wins, draws, goals and clean sheets.

The chip will become available in Gameweek 24 in January and can be played at any point thereafter in the 2024/25 season. Once you activate the chip and pick a manager, you will score points from their club’s results for three consecutive gameweeks.

Picking a manager does not use up a free transfer, but if you want to change manager then it will cost you a transfer in the same way it does for swapping players out of your squad.

An absolutely massive point about the chip that needs to be emphasised is that you cannot use any of your other chips during the three-week period the Assistant Manager is active, so use it wisely.

If a manager leaves their club, FPL managers who own or bring in that Assistant Manager will still score based on the original club’s performance.

How to score points with Assistant Manager in Fantasy Premier League

Here is how the points break down based on team performance:

Team win = 6 points

Team draws = 3 points

Goal scored by team = 1 point per goal

Clean sheet from team = 2 points

Table bonus: If your chosen manager faces a club ranked at least five places higher in the Premier League table at the start of the Gameweek, you get an EXTRA 10 points for a win, so 16 in total, or an additional five points for a draw, so eight in total.

One could pick a manager from one of the top clubs, such as Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta or Liverpool’s Arne Slot, and rack up points from the likelihood of consistent wins and clean sheets. Or, pick a manager from a club further down the standings and potentially get a bigger payoff.

A few important things to note before activating the chip:

You cannot captain your Assistant Manager.

Managers cost money and will be priced between £0.5 and £1.5m, so make sure you have money in the bank.

The Assistant Manager chip falls within the three-players-per-club quota, meaning you won’t be able to transfer in Arne Slot if you already have three Liverpool players in your FPL squad.
