Andy Robertson was sent off for denial of a goalscoring opportunity in Liverpool’s home clash with Fulham. The defender was the last man when he took down former Reds star Harry Wilson on the edge of his own box after a heavy touch.

Shown a red card by referee Tony Harrington, the decision went to VAR to check whether Wilson had been onside when the ball was played towards the Wales international.

And after a lengthy review, the on-field decision stood, with Robertson now set to serve a one-match ban and miss Liverpool’s League Cup quarter-final trip to Southampton as a result.

A statement released by the Premier League match centre later explained the decision. It read: “The referee issued a red card to Robertson for a foul on Wilson which denied a goal scoring opportunity. VAR checked to confirm the red card and that Wilson was in an onside position.”

Robertson had already been involved in one VAR review earlier in the game when he was on the receiving end of a knee-high tackle from Issa Diop. The defender was booked for the foul, with it deemed to be a ‘reckless’ challenge.

Meanwhile, Andreas Pereira later gave Fulham the lead after himself being booked for a poor challenge on Ryan Gravenberch, with many Liverpool fans complaining that he too could have been sent off.

Following Robertson’s red card, Arne Slot moved Ryan Gravenberch to centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk as he initially switched to a back three, before reverting to a four with Joe Gomez at left-back.
