Andy Robertson tries to block Andreas Pereira's shot during Liverpool vs Fulham

Andreas Pereira and Andy Robertson were at the centre of two big red card decisions in Liverpool vs Fulham

Liverpool endured a chaotic opening 15 minutes to their Premier League clash against Fulham at Anfield. Inside the first nine minutes, three players had been booked before Andreas Pereira, one of those to have picked up a caution, opened the scoring just a few minutes later.

Issa Diop and Luis Diaz were the other players shown a yellow with referee Tony Harrington brandishing a total of five cards in the first 27 minutes which also saw Antonee Robinson booked for a challenge on Diaz. The other card was a red one for Andy Robertson.

A heavy touch from the left-back allowed Harry Wilson in behind and in an attempt to stop him, clumsily stuck out a leg, which resulted in him being sent off for denial of a goal-scoring opportunity.

VAR checked the decision which saw the Premier League Match Centre on X write: "The referee issued a red card to Robertson for a foul on Wilson which denied a goal scoring opportunity. VAR checked to confirm the red card and that Wilson was in an onside position."

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean was also on hand to offer his verdict. "Yeah I think it's a red card. I think the referee has done really well," he said on Sky Sports. "He has given himself a bit of thinking time to see if they score. If they scored, it probably would have just been a yellow as it hasn't stopped a goal-scoring opportunity.

"But didn't score, brings it back and sends him off. For me it's the correct decision." Though Arne Slot could have no complaints, he may well have felt that Fulham should also be a man down and had that been given, the visitors would not have scored.

Pereira picked up his caution after catching Ryan Gravenberch on his heel with Dean believing he should have been given his marching orders. "Judging by what was said in the week with the [Match Officials Mic'd Up programme Howard [Webb] did, it was the same kind of challenge that Ndidi did on the back of Cole Palmer," he admitted.

"He goes just above the Achilles and then scrapes down. He is nowhere near the ball. He knew what he was doing for me. It should have been a red card." The foul that caused Diop to be booked was also checked for a potential red card by VAR but cleared.
