Man United have identified a potential long-term candidate from Girona to solve their ongoing issues at left back, according to a report.
Injury-prone Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw returned to Ruben Amorim's squad recently, after both missing hundreds of days of action, but the Red Devils are looking at a more sustainable option.
The 23-year-old's contract includes a £29million release clause, meaning Girona would be obliged to accept any offer that matches this price.
After internal discussions with the club, Ruben Amorim has approved the decision to approach Miguel Gutierrez, according to Estadio Deportivo.
The Spaniard has previously been scouted by United, with club staff present for a number of Gutierrez's performances at the start of 2024.
The Red Devils were reportedly impressed by his footballing intelligence and attacking aptitude.
Miguel Gutierrez has a release clause in his contract at Girona, estimated to be worth £29m
Man United consulted with Ruben Amorim before officially declaring their interest in Gutierrez
If Girona were to sell the Spaniard, 50 per cent of the transfer fee would go to Real Madrid
However, also included in Gutierrez's contract is a clause that states Real Madrid would receive 50 per cent of any transfer fee if he were to leave Girona.
A member of their academy since 2011, he left Los Blancos in 2022 for only £3m, with Real Madrid retaining 50% of his rights and this sell-on clause.
And, with recent rumours suggesting that Bayern Munich left back Alphonso Davies is likely to extend his contract in Germany next year, Gutierrez would be an economical Plan B signing for Madrid.
Mail Sport previously reported that crosstown rivals Man City were also keeping tabs on Gutierrez.
Should United wish to go up against their derby rivals, they may find negotiations trickier, due to Girona and City sharing the same City Group ownership.
However, as it stands, there are no new reports suggesting that City have a renewed interest in the defender.
