Renée Slegers tipped for Arsenal job

Meabh De Burca, the former Ireland international, has added her voice to the growing belief that Renée Slegers is the ideal candidate to become Arsenal Women’s permanent manager.

Reflecting on Slegers’ transformative impact during her interim tenure, De Burca remarked, “I imagine that Arsenal will appoint Renée Slegers. The girls seem to be playing with a lot of freedom.”

Influential Katie Mccabe is an influential player for both Ireland and Arsenal. “The Women’s Super League has definitely taken off, especially since it’s gone full time, (that) has risen the standard, the quality of matches has improved and a lot of teams playing in the men’s stadiums”, said De Burca. Arsenal are currently third in the Women’s Super League, nine points behind leaders Chelsea and tomorrow’s fixture against Liverpool is the final one before a four-week winter break. “I imagine that Arsenal will appoint Renee Slegers, the girls seem to be playing with a lot of freedom”, said De Burca.

Slegers, who stepped in following Jonas Eidevall’s departure in October, has revitalised the team, leading them to a string of impressive performances, including a commanding 3-1 victory over Vålerenga in the Women’s Champions League this week.

Her tactical adaptability, ability to integrate youth players, and the evident morale boost among the squad have been pivotal in Arsenal’s resurgence. Slegers’ ability to balance squad rotation while maintaining a high level of performance has been a hallmark of her interim tenure.

De Burca’s comments highlight the impressive momentum Slegers has built, particularly in European competition. Arsenal, under her guidance, have positioned themselves as serious contenders in the Women’s Champions League, combining attacking flair with disciplined organisation.

The prospect of Slegers taking the reins permanently is an enticing one for Arsenal supporters, who have been vocal in their appreciation of her leadership. The atmosphere among fans has been buoyed by her ability to instil confidence and cohesion within the squad.

As Arsenal gear up for their final Women’s Super League fixture before the winter break, all eyes are on the club’s management to see whether they will entrust Slegers with the long-term vision for the team.

Slegers herself has remained focused on the task at hand, emphasising recovery and preparation ahead of key matches against Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

But with her impressive track record over recent weeks, many within and outside the club share De Burca’s conviction that Arsenal have found the right manager in Renée Slegers.

Whether Arsenal make it official remains to be seen, but the case for Slegers’ permanent appointment grows stronger with every passing match.
