Substitutes

Misa on goal. Antonia and Olga started on fullbacks, Méndez and Rocío made up the CB duo. Leupolz and Teresa were the pivot duo. Møller started in a front four as a #10 with Athenea and Navarro on wings, and Redondo leading the line. Heavy rotation with 7 changes from the mid-week game against Celtic and in preparation for the upcoming Chelsea game. On the other side, the ex-Real Madrid player Samara Ortíz started on right back, with Olaya and Yohana on the bench.

The first 60 minutes of the match, before the first substitution from Alberto Toril, was a very frustrating game to watch. Despite the game being played mostly in Deportivo’s defending third, Depor managed 3 shots on target, out of 3 in total, scoring one of those in the first half.

The goal came from Olga’s side in 36’ where she was up against Ainhoa and lost the duel there for Ainhoa to enter the penalty area. She passed it to the center of the box where Barbara Latorre was waiting, and who then took a shot which got saved by Misa. Francisca Lara was at the far post to receive the rebound and push it in to take the lead that lasted until 79’.

On the other side, Real Madrid had only one shot on target, out of 7 total shots. Whopping 48% of all passes were made in Depor’s defending third, even though they didn’t let Madrid create much real danger. Aside from Athenea’s chance in 14’ where she failed the chip in a 1-on-1 against the goalkeeper, there weren’t any notable dangers from Las Blancas in the first half.

Passes of the first half

The lack of danger was the result of a lack of synergy between the wide areas and the midfield. The triangles weren’t smoothly moving the ball, and it would often result in unnecessary complications in attack.

Depor started the second half by attacking and in the first 15 minutes they got close to the goal 3 times, despite neither of the shots going on target. In 60’ everything changed when Alberto Toril made a quadruple substitution. Møller, Leupolz, Eva, and Athenea got subbed off for Weir, Angeldahl, Feller, and Linda. There was immediately a brand-new atmosphere as Angeldahl and Weir joined in to create triangles on both sides and keep the ball moving. The equalizer came in 79’. All the actions were started, and all 4 goals ended up being assisted by the substitutes.

79’: GOAL (1-1) by Olga Carmona: a short corner routine between Linda and Weir ended up with Olga who was waiting in front of the box to take a daring shot and it was unsavable for Pereira.

In a true Real Madrid fashion, with only 11 minutes to spare, Las Blancas started the remontada. Only 6 minutes after the equalizer, the remontada was already complete, and the scoresheet continued getting longer all up until the final whistle was blown.

85’: GOAL (1-2) by Alba Redondo: a cross from Angeldahl on the right-hand side found Signe Bruun in the box. She received the cross, heading it to Redondo who was positioned in front of the goal to push it in.

89’: GOAL (1-3) by María Méndez: corner taken by Weir found Méndez on the near post to head it in for 1-3.

90+5’: GOAL (1-4) by Signe Bruun: The action led by Feller on the right wing who went up against Vera and managed to free the ball to get it to Weir. The Scot shielded the ball well and passed it to Bruun who put a cherry on top of this remontada in the dying minutes of the encounter.

With this win, and Atleti’s loss in this matchday of Liga F, Real Madrid are now comfortably in second place with 3 points ahead of the city rivals and 2 games in hand.
