Everton must elevate their ambitions and no longer be the “nearly-dead men” they have been in recent years, according to Ian Darke.

The view of the TV commentator comes as the Premier League have approved the Toffees’ takeover from The Friedkin Group, which is now expected to be completed within the next week.

Darke, speaking exclusively to Goodison News, is adamant that Everton as a “proper football club” need serious investment to return to where he feels they should be competing.

“Friedkin definitely needs to invest. There are areas of the squad at Everton that need a lot of improvement. For example, they’ve got Calvert-Lewin, they’ve got Beto… but they need more in attack and they need a number 10, catalyst type of player,” he said.

“I don’t know how much money Dyche will get in January, but he’ll have done a great job if they’re in the Premier League next season and they’re playing top-flight football in the new stadium.

“They’re a proper football club, Everton. For many of us who have been around the game for a long time remember the club as title and trophy winners, but that was a long time ago. They’ve been around the ‘nearly-dead men’ for too long. So we’d love to see Everton emerge as a stronger force again.”

Everton days away from dawn of new era

With the nightmares of boardroom negotiations past, Everton fans can be forgiven for bordering on serious levels of anxiety while the due processes were underway in the background concerning The Friedkin Group.

However, Friday morning’s breakthrough of Premier League approval now means the major stumbling block is cleared and the handover of power from Farhad Moshiri to Dan Friedkin is expected to be days away.
