Jermaine Beckford has lifted the lid on what Ashley Young told him after Everton held Arsenal to a 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The 39-year-old played an important role as the Toffees came away from North London with a point on 14 December, keeping Gabriel Martinelli and later Leandro Trossard at bay.

Impressed by the veteran right-back’s performance, Beckford dubbed him as “fantastic”, but revealed that he told him he is looking forward to having a rest.

“Jermaine [Pennant] and I spoke to Ashley Young not too long ago, he’s over the [moon]”, Beckford said on Stadium Astro (14 December).

“He’s so happy, but he’s looking forward to having a couple of days of rest, isn’t he? He was the oldest player on the pitch today and you couldn’t tell, he was fantastic.

“Every single one of the Everton players, top-notch.”

Sean Dyche must not push Ashley Young beyond limits at Everton

There is no doubt that Young is happy to continue playing for Everton, but Sean Dyche must be careful about pushing him beyond his limits.

With eight Premier League teams in EFL Cup action on Wednesday and Thursday (18 and 19 December), the Toffees will not be in action until next Sunday (22 December) when they will host Chelsea at Goodison Park.

Young can, therefore, have a much-needed rest during the week before returning to action for the Merseyside-based club.

However, the very fact that he told Beckford about wanting to have a couple of days off should not come as a surprise given his fantastic afternoon.

Young has started in each of Everton’s last 12 Premier League games and it is understandable that he is growing tired, considering his age.

The Merseyside derby between the Toffees and Liverpool last Saturday (7 December) being postponed allowed the players to rest and the veteran would have no doubt appreciated it.
