Railston: Manchester United player who Real Madrid wanted might start in Manchester derby

Manchester United are looking for another win against Manchester City in the Manchester derby.

United recorded a stunning win over City in the FA Cup final at Wembley last season and head into the first Manchester derby of this campaign on the back of a victory in Europe.

Ruben Amorim's side came from behind to win 2-1 against Viktoria Plzen on Thursday night, whereas City were defeated 2-0 by Juventus in the Champions League.

City have won just one of their last 10 games and are suffering a confidence crisis, but they are still eight points ahead of United in the Premier League and are favourites to win.

Here are the moments to look for in the Manchester derby on Sunday...

Yoro in at the deep end?

Leny Yoro made his full debut for United against Nottingham Forest last weekend. He was substituted in the 67th minute, shortly after Bruno Fernandes had scored to make it 3-2, and he wasn't specifically at fault for the goals, so his performance was graded as a respectable display.

Yoro made his highly-anticipated first appearance against Arsenal at The Emirates and there were glimmers of quality on that night, despite United conceding twice in the second half.

Amorim chucked Yoro into the deep end against Arsenal but he swam instead of sinking and that will give United's head coach confidence that he can start in the Manchester derby.

It would be a huge call to give Yoro a start against City but it wouldn't be a surprise. He has been signed to be at the heart of United's defence for the next decade and gained plenty of experience playing at the top level for Lille last season, despite still being such a young defender.

Onana has a point to prove

The Manchester Evening News is taking part in a nationwide Fans' Footballer of the Year survey, and the inclusion of Andre Onana as a prominent candidate came at an unfortunate time.

Onana had enjoyed a consistent 2024 until he made a huge mistake against Forest. He then followed up that howler by committing another huge effort against Plzen on Thursday.

Just as Onana's stock began to rise, it has fallen again. His sloppy pass out from the back was awful and Plzen's manager admitted that he told his players to target Onana, which probably isn't what United want to hear ahead of one of the most important games of their season.

It seemed Onana had eliminated mistakes but they have crept back in at a bad time and he must maintain concentration against City, as it could be fine margins in the game.

Where does Mainoo stand?

Kobbie Mainoo's season hasn't got going yet. He felt the consequences of a gruelling 2023/24 when he wasn't at his usual high standards at the start of the campaign and he picked up a muscle injury in October, which was a blessing in disguise given he desperately needed a rest.

Mainoo is being gradually eased back into action and he made his first start under Amorim in the win against Everton. He was subsequently suspended for the trip to Arsenal, he started against Nottingham Forest and was on the bench again for Thursday's trip to the Czech Republic.

It's been stop-start for Mainoo and it will be fascinating to see if he starts in the derby. He is a Stockport-lad, he knows what the fixture means to supporters and scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final. Mainoo is also brilliant at retaining the ball, which will be important.

Most fans would have Mainoo in their preferred Manchester derby XI and it feels like he could really kick on if he receives the opportunity to make the starting team.

Both clubs are struggling

Without stating the obvious, both Manchester clubs are struggling this season, which adds to the intrigue of this derby. United have their lowest points total after 15 matches in the Premier League era and City's points total is their lowest at this stage since 2010/11, which confirms how bad it is.

City have taken just four points from their past six Premier League games and no other team has taken fewer over that period, so United should be optimistic about sealing a victory.

The set-piece problem

Plzen were passive on home soil on Thursday and created just one corner. United have been poor at defending set-pieces this term but that weakness wasn't exploited in the Europa League.

Arsenal and Nottingham Forest both scored from corners against United in the last two league games, though, and Pep Guardiola's coaching staff will see that area as an opportunity.

Erling Haaland is a force to be reckoned with from set-pieces and Kevin de Bruyne is a dead-ball specialist.
