Gary Lineker believes Bruno Guimaraes was fortunate to escape a red card in Newcastle United’s 4-0 win over Leicester City.

The former England striker watched on from the Match of the Day studio as his beloved Leicester conceded twice to Jacob Murphy, and once to Guimaraes and Alexander Isak.

At 1-0, Guimaraes was involved in two contentious incidents, the first being when he went to ground under a nudge from Jannik Vestergaard. The Brazilian fell onto the ball and inadvertently handled it before referee Thomas Bramall whistled for a free-kick Leicester’s way.

The visitors protested a yellow card for Guimaraes but Bramall kept his cards in his pocket until a few months later when the midfielder was booked for a studsy challenge on Stephy Mavididi.

Lineker felt Guimaraes should have been sent off for two bookable offences to which pundit Ashley Williams agreed. Lineker, however, did make light of the decision, revealing his exchange with Alan Shearer while joking Newcastle would have won “2-0 or 3-0” instead.

“All I can say is thank heavens Alan Shearer is not here! He’s not been happy with his team lately but he was today,” Lineker said. “I know because he was texting me all afternoon gloating like he does! But he’s right, they were very good.

“Leicester were dreadful, no excuses but Bruno Guimaraes was lucky to stay on the pitch. Maybe then it would have been just 2-0 or 3-0.”
