Newcastle United will be without Joelinton for next weekend’s Premier League visit to Ipswich Town.

The Magpies hammered Leicester City 4-0 at St James’ Park on Saturday to return to winning ways after going four matches without a victory. Jacob Murphy netted a brace while Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak also got on the scoresheet.

But one downside to United’s win was that Joelinton picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign. As per Premier League rules, any player who picks up five cautions inside the opening 19 league matches is forced to serve a one-match ban.

The Brazilian had previously gone nine matches without being booked but was penalised for a sliding challenge on James Justin in the 71st minute.

“It's bizarre how things work, I was on the side with him saying Joey don't get booked and he's like 'don't worry, I won't' then two minutes later he gets booked so you just couldn't make it up but sometimes these things happen,” revealed Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

“I'm disappointed to lose him because he's the type of player we need in every away game. He's such a wholehearted player so at least he can play free and play his normal game.”

The positive news is Joelinton will still be available for the Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Brentford on Wednesday as his ban is Premier League specific. Red cards, however, are different. Had the midfielder been shown a straight red card, he would have been suspended for the Bees' visit.

However, one midfielder that is suspended for Brentford is Sean Longstaff. As per EFL rules, any player who is booked twice before the semi-final stage of the competition is handed a one-match ban in that competition only. Longstaff was booked against both against Chelsea and AFC Wimbledon.
