Liverpool are currently not on winning ways after a 2-2 draw against Fulham at Anfield interrupted their impressive streak. The match had its ups and downs, but Liverpool defender Andy Robertson faced criticism from former Premier League striker Chris Sutton following a difficult performance.
Robertson had a game to forget as he was shown a red card just 17 minutes into the match, leaving Liverpool to play with 10 men for the remainder of the game. As a result, the team was unable to deliver the victory their fans had hoped for.
Liverpool must fork out atleast £40 million to land Premier League star Milos Kerkez..
The Scottish left-back had a day to forget at Anfield, receiving a red card after a late tackle on former Reds attacker Harry Wilson. After a lengthy VAR review, the referee upheld his initial decision, deeming Robertson to have denied a goal-scoring opportunity by taking down his ex-teammate just outside the box.
The Premier League released a statement confirming the VAR decision: “The referee issued a red card to Robertson for a foul on Wilson, which denied a goal-scoring opportunity. VAR checked to confirm the red card and that Wilson was in an onside position.”
Robertson endured a tough game
The officials at Stockley Park confirmed that Wilson was onside in the lead-up to the goal, with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk playing him onside.
Robertson received his red card after a chaotic 17 minutes, during which he was involved in several key moments. Reflecting on the Scotland captain’s struggles against Fulham, former Premier League winner Sutton expressed his frustration on BBC Radio 5 Live. The ex-Blackburn and Chelsea striker said,
“What an absolute stinking afternoon for Andrew Robertson. He had that collision early on, deflected Pereira’s shot, and then was sent off.”
As Sutton mentioned, Robertson had taken a heavy hit from Issa Diop just a minute into the game. Referee Tony Harrington gave Diop a yellow card, with a VAR review confirming that the decision was correct.
The Premier League later issued a statement on the matter, saying: ***“The referee issued a yellow card to Diop for a challenge on Robertson. VAR checked for a potential red card and confirmed the referee’s decision, deeming it a reckless challenge worthy of a yellow card.***“
Liverpool felt Robertson’s absence keenly in the Fulham clash, as his red card left the team with just 10 men early in the game. The Reds struggled to regain control and secure the win.
