Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has explained why Raheem Sterling minutes have been so low this season.
Speaking to the media ahead of their EFL Cup quarter-final clash against Crystal Palace, the Spaniard was asked about Sterling’s situation. Arteta seemed helpless, saying,
“There have been moments. It’s been tough and very difficult for me as well to accept that I haven’t given him more. When he hasn’t started game, 90 percent of the substitutions I’ve made are related to saving minutes, managing injuries or avoiding further injuries. It’s not for tactical reasons.”

Arteta then heaped praise on the 30-year-old, lauding his impact on the dressing room. He added,
“I would like him to play much more as I think he can impact the team in a very good way. He’s very good in the dressing room and is absolutely desperate to play. He had this very important role of impacting every game, and suddenly he’s in this position for a while – not just here but Chelsea as well.
“It’s always difficult, and I feel a lot of sympathy for players when they are in this moment. Hopefully, we can change it.”

Raheem Sterling arrived at Arsenal with loads of Premier League experience under his belt. He started off at Liverpool, making a name for himself as a teenage star under Brendan Rodgers.
However, his main impact on the league came during his time at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, where he won multiple titles.
Following that spell, Sterling moved to Chelsea where game time and a lack of a fixed position affected his form and he underwent somewhat of a dip.

Overall, he has made 385 appearances in the English top flight, scoring 123 goals and providing 63 assists as well. Known for his close control, dribbling, agility and finishing abilities, Sterling may have lost form, but will be remembered as one of the Premier League’s greatest players for years to come.
