Opinion: Mike Dean reveals why Bruno Guimaraes wasn't sent off for Newcastle against Leicester…

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has revealed that Thomas Bramall was right to not send off Bruno Guimaraes during Newcastle United’s win against Leicester City.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side were hammered on Tyneside as goals from Alexander Isak, Guimaraes and a Jacob Murphy brace condemned the Foxes to a first defeat under their new boss.

Several Leicester stars failed to impress at St James’ Park as Eddie Howe’s men delivered a harsh reality that plenty of work needs to be done.

There was a further blow as Leicester confirmed Mads Hermansen had suffered a groin injury in the first half and that there was no sign to suggest how serious it was.

The game could’ve had a different outlook entirely as Leicester fans felt Guimaraes should’ve been sent off for a dive and late challenge on Stephy Mavididi, but instead, was only given a yellow.

It caused plenty of debate but, according to Dean, it was the correct one.

Mike Dean says Bruno Guimaraes incidents weren’t a red card

During the time of the incidents Newcastle were leading 1-0 at the time and just moments after avoiding a yellow card for being accused of diving in the Leicester box when looking for a penalty.

Seconds later the midfielder was involved again as he left a high foot on Mavididi. Sky Sports Soccer Saturday star Clinton Morrison initially thought he should’ve been sent off, saying: “Why wasn’t he booked for the dive before? So he wasn’t book for the dive before, he’s just caught Mavididi high up on his shin.”

Simon Thomas then asked if he thought Guimaraes should be sent off, to which the former Crystal Palace star said: “Yeah. I thought this would be a red card. I thought VAR would have a look… it looked really high. It looked out of control, but they gave him a yellow card.”

Dean was then asked to clarify if it was a red card and the former Premier League official admitted that the right call was made.

He said: “I think with the first one with Bruno when he went down in the area the referee’s gone option three and just given a goal kick. He hasn’t cautioned him for simulation or give the free kick.

“The second one, if you go back to what they said last week with the Caicedo challenge, it’s kind of brushed his shin and gone down, so I can understand again there why he hasn’t sent him off.”

Leicester City involved in two unwanted records against Newcastle

There really wasn’t much to shout about for the Foxes on Saturday.

For example, it took Oliver Skipp and Hamza Choudhury 60 minutes to complete a tackle, showcasing just how second best Leicester were.

To add further salt to the wounds, the loss was the biggest defeat against Newcastle in the top flight of English football since 1909.

Newcastle United recorded their largest win against Leicester City in the top flight of English football since 1909.

Leicester's defeat means that they remain on 14 points after 16 matches, their lowest tally at this stage of a top-flight campaign since 2014/15 (10).

It got even worse as well as Leicester’s points total of 14 from 16 games is their lowest since the 2014/15 campaign, when they had 10 points.

It’s this sort of form that will need to be turned around quickly in order to avoid relegation back to the Championship.
