Gary Lineker wants the offside decision process changing after seeing Chris Wood have a goal controversially ruled out for offside against Aston Villa.
Nottingham Forest were in disbelief when Anthony Elanga's shoulder was declared offside by a VAR check when he crossed for Wood to score what would have been an equaliser. It was a major incident in an evening of drama at the City Ground although Forest still found a way to claw back and claim all three points, with Elanga getting the winner.
Lineker, having watched the big talking points back on Match of the Day, signed off with a message to the football authorities: “I’m not sure about the Chris Wood offside. How they can judge from that shoulder thing (I will never know). They should change it but there you go.”
Villa wanted Elanga's goal chalked off too for an alleged foul by Elliot Anderson on Matty Cash in the build-up.
Pundit Theo Walcott suggested that referee Sam Barrott's sight may have been impaired by a Villa player before adding: “I do think it’s a foul but I like the fact they’ve just played on and just decided to go with the referee’s decision. It’s a bit strong but I don’t want to see goals being disallowed for this to some extent.”
The studio guests also looked at Villa's claim for a penalty at the other end when Anderson went shoulder to shoulder with Morgan Rogers.
Walcott said: “There are two fouls here. First of all, Morgan Rogers initiates the foul by pulling Anderson’s shirt and then Anderson there’s another foul pulling his shirt. Very lucky, both of them. You can see Morgan Rogers saying (to the referee) ‘He’s pulled my arm,’ and gives Anderson the eyes.”
