Gary Lineker reveals Alan Shearer texts as Bruno Guimaraes red card verdict delivered

Gary Lineker had one cause for relief after watching Leicester City fall to a heavy defeat at Newcastle United.

The City-supporting Match of the Day host was watching the game with pundits Theo Walcott and Ashley Williams rather than regular sidekick, Newcastle legend Alan Shearer - although he still couldn't get away from Shearer's thoughts on the match.

“All I can say is thank heavens Alan Shearer is not here," said Lineker after playing the highlights from St James's Park.

“He’s not been happy actually with his team recently but he was today. I know because he was texting me all afternoon, gloating like he does. But he’s right, they were very good.”

Goals from Jacob Murphy (two), Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak inflicted a first defeat on new Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had previously overseen a win against West Ham and draw with Brighton.

But the Leicester camp thought they should have been playing against 10 men, with claims that Guimaraes should have been given his marching orders.

Lineker said: “Leicester were dreadful, no excuses. Leicester were awful.

“But… Bruno Guimaraes. Should he stay on the pitch? I think he might then have been 2 or 3-0.”

Williams thought the Newcastle star was lucky not to have been dismissed.

He said: “He was very lucky because he should have got two yellows. The first was a dive, he’s gone down early and I’m not sure why he doesn’t get booked for that unless the referee is saying it was maybe handball. I’m not sure but that’s a yellow card and he didn’t pick it up.

“He did get a yellow card a minute later for a tackle which was a little bit nasty. He’s gone over the top of the ball – and then he’s off. He actually pops up with a goal not long after that. I do think he’s a very lucky boy, Bruno.”

That was enough for Lineker to end with a quip: “All in all Leicester deserved to win then.”
