Wolves chairman Jeff Shi in the stands for the West Ham game
Wolves chairman Jeff Shi has confirmed the departure of Gary O'Neil.
Gary O'Neil and his backroom staff have left Wolves, it has been confirmed.
O'Neil was thrown into the deep end at Molineux when he was appointed just three days before the start of the 2023/24 Premier League season. He guided the club to a 14th-placed finish and into the FA Cup quarter-finals, picking up wins along the way against Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea.
But this year has been a huge struggle and his side have only picked up two wins in the opening 16 games; back-to-back victories over Southampton and Fulham either side of the international break in November.
Four defeats on the spin since then have left his position untenable and his exit was widely predicted following a 2-1 home loss to Ipswich Town on Saturday. Wolves are 19th, four points adrift of fourth-bottom Crystal Palace having played on game more.
Chairman Jeff Shi said: “We’re very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and David Moyes have emerged as the bookies' early favourites for the vacancy while odds are crashing on West Brom boss Carlos Corberan.
