Chelsea should now consider selling £39m player who's being linked to Premier League rivals - opinion

Chelsea are unlikely to be too busy in the January transfer window in terms of incomings.

Under Enzo Maresca, they are having a very good season so are not in desperate need of reinforcements.

Maresca was asked about signing a defender in his most recent pre-match press conference, but the 44-year-old ruled it out for the time being.

However, while Chelsea look strong presently, the same cannot be said about other Premier League clubs, including West Ham United, who are now being linked with one of the Blues’ defenders.

Chelsea should consider selling Axel Disasi amid West Ham interest

It has been claimed that West Ham are interested in signing Axel Disasi on loan next month.

The Hammers could do with the arrival of an experienced central defender like the 26-year-old with the way that they are playing at the moment.

West Ham are currently 14th in the Premier League table and have one of the worst defensive records in the division after conceding 28 goals.

Chelsea, in contrast, have one of the better defensive records, with only Arsenal and Liverpool having conceded fewer goals than them.

However, Disasi has not contributed too much to that. The Frenchman has only made three appearances in the Premier League this season, finding himself behind Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana in the pecking order.

Fofana is out injured, but Maresca still has Colwill, Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo, while Renato Veiga can also play in central defence, meaning that Chelsea probably can afford to let Disasi go and should not take that option off the table.

The France international has struggled at Chelsea at times following his £38.8m arrival from AS Monaco last summer. For example, Jason Cundy thought Disasi was “terrible” in Chelsea’s 4-3 win against Manchester United in the previous campaign.

Could Axel Disasi start against Brentford?

Before the transfer window opens, Chelsea still have several games to play, including a west London derby against Brentford this evening.

With Fofana still out injured, Disasi will be hoping to get the nod to start alongside Colwill.

Since Fofana’s injury, though, Maresca has gone with Badiashile in the right centre-back position. With that in mind, then, you would expect him to start ahead of his compatriot.
