The Toffees secure win over Manchester City

Brian Sørensen hoped to give Manchester City hell during the last WSL match of the year. His side had the perfect block set up against the number two in the table. City could not get past their defense and when they did the attempts on target were not good enough. Read our match report on Everton vs Manchester City.

Slow beginning with little action

Manchester City started out with slow build up play. The defenders and even Keating hold onto the ball too long, with what appears a lack of option to play to. Everton is quick to pick up on any City mistakes and that leads to an outbreak from Katja Snoeijs. The Dutch international drove into the box at top speed. Her shot went wide but it was good to put City under pressure like that.

Everton holds City out of the 18-yard box

Everton’s defensive lines are set up very well. Manchester City is trying to work through it but even getting to the 18-yard box is hard. Crosses are blocked and build up is interrupted before reaching that final area.

Ouahabi’s cross into the box was volleyed towards goal by Roord but her effort was blocked. The ball landed with Blindkilde Brown; she managed to shoot but Brosnan could pick up the ball easily. This was most of the action in the opening 20 minutesm from City’s side.

Everton turns up the heat & opens the score

Hasegawa sent her cross into the box, but it was blocked. Everton got the ball to Payne, who made a speedy run into the box. She tried to find Snoeijs, but her pass did no go near her teammate. It was a good break though. The home team might not be on the ball much but when they are, they make it count.

The next Everton outbreak earns them a corner. Kennedy clears the ball by heading it away. But the ball goes back into the box by Holmgaard, her cross finds Hope ready to head it past Keating.

The Toffees double the lead

Five minutes later it’s Everton again with a dangerous attack. Toni Payne charged for goal all by herself, but she held onto the ball too long. Eventually tried to go around Keating and maybe go for the cross but Keating was there to stop it.

Before half time Everton counters once again: Lawley charged forward and seemed to aim for Snoeijs but the ball went behind her and landed perfectly for Hayashi, who doubled the lead.

City tried to get one back

City thought they scored the 1-2 as Brosnan dropped the ball. Vanhaevermeat held the ball off the line with what seemed to be an arm, but the referee did not think so. Everton immediately went on the counter and sent Toni Payne away once again. She drove into the box and was challenged by Keating before the offside flag went up.

Time for the break: What will Taylor do?

Gareth Taylor had some thinking to do with his side down by 2-0. Murphy came on for Kennedy. Taking of a defender to put on an extra attacker is always a risk but the head coach was willing to take it.

Murphy made an impact right from the start. She sent a cross into the box but Roord was just too late and tipped it wide.

Toni Payne made her third run for the Manchester City box. Again timed it perfectly but faces Casparij and Keating in the box. The Dutch international blocked Payne’s shot and that earned Everton a corner-kick. Hayashi’s effort from the corner went wide.

Manchester City struggles to break through

Subbing Murphy on was a very good one as she totally changed the dynamic on the left side. However, after 15 minutes in the second half it was Everton with the most chances so Taylor had to adapt some more. He chose to bring Chloe Kelly on and take Blindkilde Brown off.

With 15 more minutes to go in the regular time Manchester City had 13 shot and only 5 on target. Jess Park was subbed off and replaced by Laura Coombs. Even the experienced player could not add much to the game

Olesen gives away Penalty kick

Olesen was subbed on and Toni Payne made way for her. The substitute gave a penalty way by pulling Hasegawa down in the box. Mary Fowler got behind the ball. Courtney Brosnan is one hell of a penalty stopper so Fowler had a tough job. She kept her head cool and put it in the back of the net.

There were 5 minutes of added time but even another hour would not have been enough. The Everton defence was too good today and they deserved the three points. The 2-1 win takes them straight to 9th place.
