Crystal Palace overcame rivals Brighton to earn three valuable points in their fight against relegation on a memorable day for Oliver Glasner’s men.
Brighton came into the game knowing a win would take them level with Manchester City in fifth, while Palace were only one point clear of the drop zone. Brighton also hadn’t lost a home Premier League game this season. Few people would have predicted this outcome.
But Palace have been on a decent run of late, and ultimately they deserved a win which moved them up to 15th in the table.
Trevoh Chalobah opened the scoring from a corner before Ismaïla Sarr headed Tyrick Mitchell’s deep cross into the net to double the visitors’ lead six minutes later.
Brighton pushed hard for an equaliser after the break but couldn’t find a way through, and Sarr went on to put the result completely beyond doubt eight minutes from time. A late Marc Guéhi own goal was nothing more than a consolation for Brighton.
The win extends Palace’s unbeaten run to five matches and leaves Brighton winless in four. There may still be eight points separating the rivals, but on this performance, the teams look far more closely matched than the league table suggests.
