Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic says he can understand the emotional response of Wolves’ players to their 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town on Saturday.
Gary O’Neil was sacked as Wolves boss following the defeat to the Tractor Boys – a result that left them six points away from Everton – at Molineux (15 December), but it was the scenes after the game that drew criticism.
Matheus Cunha was involved in an altercation with an Ipswich staff member in which he appeared to remove the man’s glasses from his face, while Rayan Ait Nouri had to be dragged by Craig Dawson as the row escalated.
Reacting to the footage he saw live on Sky Sports News (15 December), Begovic said: “The one thing you really can’t legislate for is losing, I mean Clinton (Morrison) knows one day you’re in a football club and a dressing room, whenever you lose that’s not something people teach you how to deal with those situations.
“And when, you know, you’ve invested a lot of time, you invest a lot of energy, it’s your livelihood, you take it personal, so of course, it’s going to be difficult for everyone.

“And I think also one thing to consider, they’ve got a very young squad as Clinton rightly said, lost a lot of quality, but also leadership, you know, the captains who they’ve lost were more influential in that dressing room.”

You obviously never want to condone such ugly scenes at the end of the football game and, in truth, Cunha definitely needs to be banned for going entirely too far with his actions towards the Ipswich staff member.
But from an Everton perspective, it is kind of nice to see a club who are struggling at the wrong end of the table falling apart, much like they did against West Ham only a few days prior, when they are a club the Toffees don’t want to see gain any ground on them.

While Everton picked up a very valuable point against Arsenal, Wolves were busy getting themselves embroiled in more needless controversy and quite frankly let them continue if it means Sean Dyche and his squad can quietly go about inching away from danger.
There’s still plenty of work to be done, of course, but the last couple of games have certainly seen much improvement.
