Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella received a red card after the final whistle in his side's 2-1 win over Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday, December 15. The Blues claimed a seventh successive win across all competitions to move within two points of league leaders Liverpool (having played a game more).
Enzo Maresca orchestrated an important win for the Blues at Stamford Bridge and a key contributor to the result was Spanish left-back Cucurella. Rested for the midweek trip to Kazakhstan, the 26-year-old was restored into the XI against Brentford and delivered a quality performance.
Cucurella got on the scoresheet in the 43rd minute, scoring his first goal for the club in the Premier League. The former Brighton & Hove Albion man, however, was shown a second yellow card in secpnd-half stoppage time and subsequently sent off after the full-time whistle.
Marc Cucurella received his first booking in the 95th minute after a lunge on Fabio Carvalho with which he got the ball, but caught the Brentford man in his follow-through. His second booking came for shoving Bees forward Kevin Schade following the final whistle. The pair shoved each other, forcing referee Peter Bankes to brandish yellow cards at them.
The Blues will be without Cucurella when they face Everton at Goodison Park on December 22. The Spaniard has played 15 times in the Premier League this season, 13 of which have been starts. He has missed one league game, the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in October due to suspension for yellow card accumulation.
Chelsea break duck with deserved win over Brentford
Chelsea ended an uninspiring record against West London neighbours Brentford by picking up all three points with a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge. The win over the Bees strengthens the title ambitions of Enzo Maresca's young team, leaving them two points adrift of leaders Liverpool. This was Chelsea's first win against Brentford at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League era.
Marc Cucurella scored his first league goal for the Blues in the 43rd minute as he ghosted into the Brentford box to head home a cross from Noni Madueke. The Blues continued to dominate, but had to wait until the 80th minute for their second goal. Nicolas Jackson scored after being set up by Enzo Fernandez, taking his league tally for the season to nine goals.
Brentford did not go down without a fight and scored in the 90th minute through Bryan Mbeumo to set up a nervy finale. Chelsea's young players showed calm heads to see out the win, their seventh in succession.
