Former player Tony Cascarino has ripped into Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus amid his poor run of form at the Emirates. Cascarino said he expected the Brazil international to hit the ground running following his arrival at the Emirates Stadium. The 62-year-old opined that Jesus had failed to meet expectations given his affiliation with Manchester City, who have dominated English football over the years.
Gabriel Jesus joined Arsenal from City in 2022 for a reported fee of €52.2 million. He scored 95 goals and provided 45 assists in 236 appearances for the Sky Blues, winning numerous trophies in the process. However, he has failed to replicate his goalscoring heroics at the Emirates so far, with injuries curtailing his game time for the Gunners.
The Brazilian has only one goal in 33 games for the North London club across competitions since January. Speaking on talkSPORT, Cascarino recently weighed in on Gabriel Jesus’ performances for Arsenal so far and gave his two cents, saying:
"When him [Jesus] and Zinchenko first came, there was a lot of optimism about the two players and rightly so. You're bringing two players from a winning club. This was what Arsenal needed. I just think the longer he's been there, he's got poorer. He's not played as well."
"Maybe missing games and being on the bench, having a number of injuries, you lose a bit of something. He looks very erratic for a player that's won so much in front of goal. Most players are being judged on how clinical they are. He's not been clinical for Arsenal and certainly not in the last year or so," he added.
In two years at Arsenal, Gabriel Jesus has scored 20 goals and provided 17 assists in 89 appearances across competitions.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta isn’t concerned about Gabriel Jesus’ lack of goals
Mikel Arteta recently shared his thoughts on Gabriel Jesus’ goal drought at Arsenal. The Spanish manager assessed the performance of the 27-year-old after the Gunners' 3-0 win over Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday (December 11).
He said (via Tribal Football):
"Nothing, just to put him in front of goal like he’s done today on a couple of occasions, and there are millimetres, centimetres to if the goal goes in or not. He was there, he looked really alive, he had created the first goal from a great move and that’s him, so we have him back he’s with us and I’m sure he will contribute to the team."
He added:
"We have a massive responsibility. I cannot kick the ball but we can coach them, we can teach them and sometimes they have to take a step back as well, it’s a decision they have to take. They cannot be thinking about what they have to do, what we’ve told them as well. We try to provide the right information and right tools so they can understand the defence, understand the keeper a lot of things that we work on, and after that it’s their execution. It’s a difficult thing to do in football but they have a lot of talent to deliver that."
