'Wonderful mentality': Danny Murphy blown away by what he saw from one Liverpool player vs Fulham

Liverpool left it late to secure a point against Fulham on Saturday, with the Reds enduring a dramatic and tense game at Anfield.

Andy Robertson’s early sending-off meant Liverpool had to face Marco Silva’s side with one less player for the majority of the match, though that didn’t stop the Merseyside giants from putting in one heck of a Premier League performance.

Even with Chelsea closing the gap to two points, Liverpool were impressive against Fulham, with Ryan Gravenberch winning special praise from Steve Nicol after being shifted into central defence as cover for Robertson.

And Danny Murphy was also impressed by another Liverpool player against Fulham.

Cody Gakpo ‘epitomised’ Liverpool’s performance vs Fulham

Speaking on Premier League Goal Rush, the pundit highlighted Cody Gakpo’s performance for Liverpool against Fulham as the one that summed up how intense the Reds were on Saturday despite going down a player.

With Nicol predicting Gakpo to back himself in Liverpool’s best starting XI, the Dutch international enjoyed a fantastic game as the winger bagged his ninth goal of the season in all competitions, with Murphy impressed with what he saw.

The former Liverpool player said: “He’s got a wonderful mentality individually as a player to keep going. Even at times when he’s been criticised in the past, his work ethic has been always the same wherever he has to play, and he epitomised that Liverpool performance.

“He got in at the back post to get his goal, he kept on pressing, he does his work, he had to tweak his position in the second-half, I think there’s so much for Liverpool to take from that performance in a positive sense rather than worrying about the two points dropped.”

Gakpo is starting to show his true colours at Liverpool

With Gakpo lauding Arne Slot for his half-time team talk with Liverpool, the former PSV Eindhoven star is finally starting to show his true colours with the Reds, with the winger in sensational form.

A goal against Fulham will give the forward plenty of confidence heading into this week’s huge ties against Southampton in the League Cup and Tottenham in the Premier League, with Liverpool looking to end December on a high.

And Gakpo knows that he needs to ride this wave if he’s to retain his spot in the starting XI, with the attacker starring to show why Liverpool shelled out almost £45m to sign the attack two years ago.
