Tottenham absolutely trash Southampton 5-0 as Ange shows his fight to avoid being sacked
Prior to Sunday’s huge victory, Spurs had been enduring a tough run, with two losses from their last four matches in December. The pressure on Ange Postecoglou had been at its peak, with fans growing increasingly frustrated and calling for his dismissal. However, today’s performance was a statement, silencing critics and proving the real quality of Tottenham and their Australian manager.
Tottenham Hotspur put on a dominant display in the first half against Southampton, leading 5-0 at the break. The visitors took the lead early in the first minute through James Maddison’s right-footed strike from the edge of the box. Spurs continued to attack relentlessly, with Son Heung-Min doubling their lead in the 12th minute from inside the box. Dejan Kulusevski made it 3-0 in the 14th minute, finishing from close range, and Pape Sarr added a fourth in the 25th minute following a rapid counter-attack. Maddison then sealed the first-half dominance with a clinical finish from the left side of the six-yard box in the 49th minute. Tottenham’s commanding lead at halftime was enough to show where this game was headed, providing a much-needed confidence boost for both the team and Postecoglou.
The Lilywhites, after their dominant first-half performance leading 5-0, appeared to ease off in the second half. While it was likely a tactical decision to slow down the game, Southampton did create a few chances, including a goal ruled out for offside. Tottenham made several substitutions to manage the game, with James Maddison, Djed Spence, and Son Heung-Min all coming off. Southampton pushed forward but struggled to break down Spurs, with a few attempts going wide or being blocked. The match ended with the Spurs not messing up the massive 5-0 lead, as the Spurs and Ange especially showed that he is not going out without a fight.
Player Ratings-
Fraser Forster: 7
Returning to his former club, it seemed like one of the easiest first halves he’s ever had. A near spectator for much of the game, but stepped up when Adam Armstrong broke through in the second half, only to be flagged offside. Made some solid saves and played a key role in the overall victory. A fantastic performance from the veteran.
Djed Spence: 8
Beautifully created the opening goal and effectively enjoyed a training session for much of the game. Roamed forward at will, showcasing what had been missing in the squad. An absolutely fantastic performance.
Archie Gray: 5
Although centre-back is clearly not his natural position, he was exposed as Southampton pushed for a consolation goal in the second half. However, by that point, the away fans hardly noticed. He still managed over 100 touches and some impressive progressive passes. Fair play to the youngster.
Radu Dragusin: 7
Despite a reputation for lacking game time and struggling in Europe, Southampton were expected to test the Romanian tonight. However, they didn’t, and his recent performances have been decent. Spurs may want to reconsider their stance on him, as he looks set to redeem himself.
Destiny Udogie: 7
The left-back started strong, focusing more on linking with the attack than being on defensive duty. However, an early injury cut his evening short, adding to the bad luck for the Lilywhites, who are already struggling with a growing injury list.
Pape Sarr: 8
A smooth finish put up Tottenham’s 4th as the Senegalese dominated the early stages, cutting through the home midfield with ease. Though he faded later on, his performance marked a redemption after a string of below-par games. Today, the midfielder proved he deserves his spot in the starting line-up.
Lucas Bergvall: 7
The 18-year-old has all the qualities of a future Premier League star. Calm and composed in possession, with precise passing, he continues to impress. We look forward to watching his development as he matures into a key player.
James Maddison: 10
He struck twice before the break and was the man to watch today. With the PDC Darts Championship kicking off tonight, his trademark celebration was perfectly timed. This performance sent a clear message to his critics—and possibly to Postecoglou.. that he’s Spurs’ next main man. It was a reminder of last season’s Maddison, a truly stunning display.
Dejan Kulusevski: 8
The most underrated player in the Premier League. Scoring the third goal, James Maddison was once again the standout performer, continuing to shine despite the team’s mixed results. The trademark of consistency, he’s been the one Spurs player who has reliably delivered week in, week out, making him an undeniable standout this season.
Dominic Solanke: 6
Posed a constant threat in the first half and played a key role in Spurs’ attacking dominance. However, he’ll be disappointed not to have found the back of the net as the team side ran riot.
Heung-Min Son: 9
Grabbed a goal and provided an assist in the first half, equalling Spurs legend Darren Anderton for the most assists in the club’s history. Subbed off at halftime, likely to ease up injury signs. Performances like this suggest he’s slowly rediscovering his best form.

Substitutes:
Pedro Porro: 5
Had a night to forget, coming on and immediately making two costly mistakes.
Brennan Johnson: 6
Entered at half-time but struggled to make an impact as the game slowed down. Missed a golden chance late on, failing to showcase his true potential.
A. Dorrington: 6
Made his Premier League debut at 19, and while he had some nervy moments, he’ll be relieved that Southampton’s late consolation was ruled out for offside. A decent introduction to top-flight football.
T. Werner: N/A
Just days after being publicly criticised by his manager, he was subbed on late but failed to make any real impact on the game.
Will Lankshear: N/A
Brought on in the final minutes with the result already secured.
