Newcastle United go in search of redemption on Wednesday night when they face Brentford.
For the second time in a fortnight, Newcastle United face Brentford. But while the previous encounter was a Premier League clash, the upcoming contest is for a place in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.
It is a massive game for Eddie Howe’s side, as Newcastle aim to end their trophy drought. While this has been an inconsistent season for the Magpies so far, the quest for silverware continues.
But it will be very difficult on Wednesday night. Toon fans have already seen how good Thomas Frank’s side are this season, with Newcastle losing 4-2 to Brentford earlier this month.
That was a desperate display, with Alan Shearer questioning Newcastle’s attitude.

On that day, Igor Thiago started up front for Brentford. It was his first start since his £30million arrival from Club Brugge.
While he did not score, Thiago bullied Fabian Schar, with the Swiss centre-back enduring a rotten afternoon up against the Brazilian number nine.
That could be cause for concern ahead of Wednesday night, but Brentford boss Thomas Frank has now admitted that Thiago could miss the Carabao Cup clash at St James’ Park through injury.

Newcastle can take heart from Brentford’s away record this season
After Thiago missed the defeat to Chelsea on Sunday night, Brentford could be without their record signing again on Wednesday. However, the Bees have enough attacking talent to cause Newcastle problems without Igor Thiago. Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa are testament to that.
But Brentford’s big concern going into Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash is their away record.
While Newcastle recently saw how good they are at the Gtech Community Stadium, it is a different story on the road.
Brentford have only won one away game all season in all competitions. That came in the second round of the Carabao Cup, as they beat Colchester United 1-0 at the JobServe Community Stadium.
Their record away from home is incredibly poor, which should give Newcastle confidence that they can advance to the final four of this season’s Carabao Cup.
