Sheffield Wednesday: Southampton stance on Danny Rohl emerges after Russell Martin exit

Some officials at Southampton are admirers of Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl.

This is according to Jack Rosser, who posted this update shortly after Russell Martin's exit from St Mary's was confirmed.

Martin had struggled with the Saints for much of the season, with his side failing to adapt to the challenge of the Premier League following their play-off final win.

They may have only been in the Championship for one season before securing a top-flight return, but that hasn't helped the south-coast side, who look destined for relegation as things stand.

The style of play and a refusal to deviate from their set style has clearly been a problem - and the Saints board have now pulled the trigger as they look to rescue their season.

This decision was made following their 5-0 home defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, but his departure had been coming for a while, with the Saints winning just one of their 16 league games this season.

With this in mind, it's no surprise that they currently sit rock bottom of the top-tier table, and whoever comes in will have a huge job on their hands to guide the south-coast side to survival.

Southampton's interest in Danny Rohl emerges

The Saints may have already lined up some potential candidates for the top job before sacking Martin - and it wouldn't be a surprise to see plenty of names linked with the job in the next week or two.

According to Rosser, it seems likely that they will appoint a foreign boss.

He also added that the Owls' boss Rohl is someone that some officials at St Mary's admire, which will concern many Wednesday supporters.

Rohl not only guided the Owls to safety at the end of last term, but they have also put in some admirable displays this season too, so it wouldn't be a surprise if the South Yorkshire side face a battle to retain him.

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri

It's clear that Rohl faces challenges at Hillsborough.

Dejphon Chansiri isn't the most popular owner and Wednesday aren't one of the stronger teams in the division on paper.

However, he's been allowed to develop his skills in South Yorkshire, and he should only look to move on when the right opportunity comes along.

Right now, St Mary's isn't the right place to be and it would be an extremely difficult task to guide the club to safety.

He won't want a relegation on his CV, so staying where he currently is may be the best option at this stage.
