Sunderland alongside Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday in Premier League winger chase

Sunderland are among the numerous sides eyeing Aston Villa starlet Louie Barry, according to the Sunday Mirror.

Sunderland have had an excellent campaign to date and are right in amongst the promotion chasers.

After their brilliant 3-2 comeback win over Swansea City at the weekend, the Black Cats have closed the gap to 2nd-placed Leeds United to just two points again.

Despite the fine start, it is expected that the Wearside outfit will be in for a busy January transfer window. Head coach Regis Le Bris wants additions to add more competition to his squad.

Now, according to the Sunday Mirror, Sunderland are among the clubs in the race to sign Aston Villa’s Louie Barry. The 21-year-old star is on loan with League One side Stockport County but looks set to be recalled by his parent club ahead of a Championship move.

The Black Cats are far from the only side with eyes on Barry ahead of the winter. Leeds United are said to be keen, while Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday are also monitoring his situation.

Barry has been the standout player for Stockport County in the first half of the ongoing campaign. He has scored 14 goals in 20 games with the Hatters chasing a play-off spot.

Villa should look at Amad success

With Amad Diallo showing his quality week in and week out for Manchester United, many of the Old Trafford faithful have been left pleasantly surprised. Not Sunderland fans, however.

During his loan spell with the Black Cats in 2022/23 he was a star performer and can be viewed as an example of how the Wearside outfit can develop loan stars.

Aston Villa will be keen to ensure Barry joins the right club and Sunderland are a perfect place for youngsters. With one of the youngest squads in England, he would fit in perfectly.

Another factor in their favour is that he has the perfect opportunity to nail down that left-wing spot. Romaine Mundle and Tommy Watson both face spells out injured, something Barry could take advantage of.

Norwich City visit the Stadium of Light next up off the back of a 2-1 defeat to Burnley. The Canaries will provide a good test for Sunderland but Johannes Hoff Thorup’s side have been very inconsistent.

They then face Blackburn Rovers, who are the Championship’s form side right now. John Eustace and co have won their last six games and are just three points behind the Black Cats with a game in hand.

Sunderland will be desperate to build on the seven points they secured last week. The win over Swansea City showed their character and they will need to show it again over the next two games.
