Eddie Howe has heaped the praise on one particular Newcastle player who he claims has “come on leaps and bounds”.
The Miguel Almiron purple patch of years gone by came under Howe, not to mention the absolute resurgence of Joelinton into a midfield powerhouse.
The latest disciple of a Howe transformation has come to fruition in recent weeks, and the gaffer has pointed out the “resilience” of a winger who came up trumps on Saturday despite a poor start to the game.
Two goals, two assists, two games. The stats seem to speak for themselves, but the sloppy possession has left some frustrated with the output of Jacob Murphy – who gestured ‘what?’ to the home crowd after netting yesterday’s opener.
With a few missed chances mixed in with poor giveaways before opening his account on Saturday, Howe complimented the 29-year-old on his performance and his mental strength:
_“I’m really pleased because every attacking player needs to feel they are contributing with assists and goals._
_“He got two assists last week, but ultimately nothing substitutes scoring. For him to score two today after missing a couple of chances shows his mental resilience and qualities._
_“He’s come on leaps and bounds since I’ve been here. Delighted for him today. He’s such a well-liked character.”_
I must preface this by saying Newcastle undoubtedly need to sign a right winger sooner rather than later, however Murphy’s stats are really quite impressive this season.
His two goals against Leicester, added to his four assists already this season, giving the winger six goal involvements in 13 appearances, only eight of which have been starts. Two assists one Saturday, a brace the next, his contributions in front of goal can’t go ignored in recent weeks.
History suggests he doesn’t maintain these numbers, but if Murphy continues to prove his worth he will be more than a dependable second choice right winger should we make a move in next month’s transfer window.
