close

Manager Enzo Maresca has revealed what referee Peter Bankes told him regarding Marc Cucurella’s red card following Chelsea's s 2-1 victory against Brentford. The Italian manager said Bankes told him that Cucurella was shown a second yellow card at the end of the match which led to the Spaniard defender being sent off due to unsportsmanlike conduct.

Cucurella, who opened the scoring for the Blues, was sent off at full-time following a bust-up with Brentford’s Fábio Carvalho after the game. The scuffle saw Cucurella sent off for a second yellow card offense, and he had already been booked in the 95th minute for committing a foul.

When Maresca was asked if he was aware of the incident that led to Cucurella being sent off, the former responded, sharing what Peter Bankes told him. He said (via Football.london):

“I asked the referee and he said to me that the second yellow card was for bad attitude. When the final whistle [was blown], I was with the coaching staff, hugging them and celebrating so I did not see nothing. I don’t know.”

The Spaniard will miss Chelsea's next Premier League match against Everton on Sunday, December 22.

Enzo Maresca says Chelsea does not have a discipline problem following Marc Cucurella’s red card’’

Enzo Maresca does not feel that Chelsea has a discipline problem after marauding left-back Cucurella was shown his marching orders following his unethical conduct after the game.

The Blues boss emphasized the need for minor improvements in game management rather than any fundamental behavioral overhaul. When asked if Chelsea has a discipline problem, Maresca responded (via Football.london):

"No, no. I've said many times we can do many things better; the way we attack and the way we defend but also the way we need to manage some moments. This is probably one of the moments we can improve but overall, with the spirit of the team, we know that sometimes you can receive some yellow cards. Probably the second one is not the correct one, or the correct thing to do, but there are things that we need to improve."

Cucurella’s impending absence against Everton will be his second suspension in the Premier League this season. He was initially suspended for the match against Liverpool after picking up five consecutive yellow cards.
