Sheffield Wednesday boss eyed by Premier League side

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is a contender for the Southampton job, according to a report by talkSPORT.

Sheffield Wednesday may have to face some interest in their highly-rated head coach. The Saints are in the hunt for a new manager after they decided to sack former MK Dons and Swansea City man Russell Martin.

Rohl, 35, has worked with the Premier League side before and has done a very impressive job since taking over the Owls last season. He guided them to Championship survival against the odds in the last campaign and they are now currently sat in 9th position in the table, five points off the play-offs.

In this latest update regarding the Saints’ search for Martin’s replacement, talkSPORT claim they ‘could turn’ to Rohl. They are bottom of the table after their 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and are nine points from safety after a tough past few months.

Rohl spent his playing days in the German lower leagues before delving into the coaching world.

He started out at RB Leipzig before working at Southampton, Bayern Munich and with the Germany national team.

Sheffield Wednesday handed him his first managerial role as a number one in October last year and he became the youngest manager in the Football League.

The Zwickau-born man has won 42.86% of matches since his move to South Yorkshire.

Rohl was handed a new contract by the Owls back in May running until the summer of 2027.

He told their club website at the time: “I am delighted to extend my contract with Sheffield Wednesday. This is a fantastic club that has taken me to heart and I feel exactly the same way.

“I would like to thank the chairman for giving me this opportunity and now we are excited to look forward and can plan ahead together for the new season.”

What now?

Sheffield Wednesday will be sweating over his future now amid links to Southampton.

He knows the Saints already and could be seen as the man capable of getting them out of trouble, just like he did with the Owls last term.

Time will tell whether they end up lodging an approach for him after cutting ties with Martin.
