Southampton could look to appoint 35y/o as next manager, he's backers on boardroom - journalist

Southampton could look to appoint Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl as their next manager, according to Alex Crook.

The Saints are at the bottom of the Premier League table with just five points from 16 games, and they sacked Russell Martin on Sunday after their 5-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary’s.

Martin helped Southampton secure promotion to the Premier League last season, but their campaign has been disastrous.

The talkSPORT journalist has claimed that Rohl is a contender for the vacant managerial role at Southampton. The German, who previously worked as an assistant to Ralph Hasenhuttl at St Mary’s, has the backing of some of the club’s board members.

The 35-year-old manager has done a terrific job at Wednesday. It took charge of the club in October 2023 and guided them to Championship safety last season.

This season, the Owls sit ninth in the table, five points off a play-off spot, and they are in the race for promotion.

Right decision to sack Rusell Martin

When Southampton defeated Leeds United in the play-off final, Martin was seen as a hero at the club.

He implemented a fantastic brand of football that was so enjoyable to watch. However, the Premier League is a different level, and Martin refused to take a pragmatic approach in his style.

Southampton kept on making the same mistakes almost on a weekly basis, and Martin showed no willingness to change that.

Eventually, the Saints lost patience with him. Against the Spurs, Martin was forced to hear toxic chants from his own fans in the stands.

Chants of, ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ followed after Southampton went 2-0 down, and Martin looked like a dead man walking.

Relegation back to the Championship is inevitable, and a herculean effort will be required to turn things around.

Rohl has previously worked as a coach at RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich and served as an assistant manager for the German national team under Hansi Flick.
