Bukayo Saka against Everton

Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has openly criticised Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka for losing his “battle” against Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye during the goalless draw at the Emirates on Saturday.
The result proved to be a setback for Arsenal, who missed a vital opportunity to close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool. Coming off the back of another draw against Fulham, Arsenal’s hopes of reclaiming the title were dealt a blow by a resolute Everton defensive performance.
Speaking onMatch of the Day, Walcott, now a football pundit, highlighted Ndiaye’s exceptional defensive display against Bukayo Saka, emphasising the winger’s contributions to Everton’s disciplined approach.
“Ndiaye started to enjoy defending, which is a bit of a rarity,” Walcott remarked. “He won the battle with Saka.”

Analysing a clip from the game, Walcott pointed out Ndiaye’s effort, adding: “This is 30 minutes in, and he already looks tired after working so hard.”

Walcott, who played for both clubs during his career, was full of praise for Everton’s collective defensive effort. He noted how Everton’s players supported one another to stifle Arsenal’s attack.
“Jordan Pickford said it after the match—they worked hard for each other. They doubled up,” Walcott explained. “When Arsenal got in behind, Everton put bodies on the line, with James Tarkowski leading the way.”

He continued: “Ndiaye had help too. If he wasn’t there, Abdoulaye Doucoure or Idrissa Gueye would step in, allowing the others to catch their breath. They limited Arsenal to crosses, and when they did get through, Pickford pulled off some fantastic saves.”
Walcott also pointed to the contributions of Everton’s other wide players, including Jesper Lindstrøm, Jack Harrison, and even veteran Ashley Young, who supported their teammates defensively.
However, Walcott suggested that Arsenal’s struggles in front of goal from open play remain a key concern for Mikel Arteta’s side. “Goals from open play is the issue for Arsenal this season,” he concluded.
The draw sees Arsenal slip further behind in the title race, while Everton continue to show resilience as they aim to climb the table.
