Cucurella sends Madueke message after red card as Chelsea close Liverpool gap

Chelsea have closed the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to just two points with a 2-1 win against Brentford at Stamford Bridge.

Marc Cucurella opened the scoring in the first-half against the Bees before Nicolas Jackson doubled the Blues' advantage late on. Bryan Mbeumo replied for the visitors but it proved to be a mere consolation for Thomas Frank's team in SW6.

Cucurella was, at one point, going to be one of Chelsea's heroes of the evening but he let himself down somewhat by picking up a silly second yellow card after the full-time whistle had been blown. The Spain international will now miss the trip to Merseyside at the weekend to face Everton at Goodison Park.

The red card, though, did not dampen Cucurella's spirits with the left-back very active on social media after the game. He posted a story of he and Noni Madueke celebrating, with the caption "Mandem". Madueke put in a peach of a cross to set up Cucurella's header in the first-half.

Madueke also put up an Instagram post himself, sharing several images of him in action on Sunday night alongside a blue love heart emoji. Many Chelsea players commented on the post, with captain Reece James saying: "Zee way or no way". Carney Chukwuemeka wrote: "Every time", while Trevoh Chalobah, on loan at Crystal Palace from the Blues, said: "Step by step".

Cole Palmer, who had the rare event of not scoring or assisting in a match, posted an image of him sat down on the pitch with Jadon Sancho at full-time with the caption "1%". Sancho produced another brilliant performance for the Blues as he kept up his improved form in recent matches.

Jackson, too, carried on his superb form. The 23-year-old striker netted his ninth goal of the Premier League season with an emphatic finish into the bottom corner to beat the impressive Mark Flekken. Jackson posted an image on Instagram with the caption: "We keep going team" alongside a blue love heart emoji.

Despite Chelsea going within two points of Liverpool, and knowing a victory against Everton would at least temporarily move them to the top of the Premier League table at the weekend, Enzo Maresca maintained his position of the Blues not being ready to compete for the title this season. Speaking after the game on Sunday, Maresca said: "No matter how many games we are going to win, I think we are not ready to compete for the title.

"One of the reasons why is because I think [other] teams know how to compete for titles. They are not going to concede the goal we conceded.

"We conceded the goal on 90 minutes, throw-in for us, we conceded a goal. A team that knows how to win titles, that goal they are not going to concede. This is one of the reasons why I continue to say we are not ready for titles, even if you don't believe me or you think that I say that for... I've told you many times I would love the pressure to compete for titles but we are not ready for many reasons; one of the reasons why is because we cannot concede the goal we conceded, open the game and give them the chance to take a point here."
