Sonny: “As captain, these young lads make my job easy”

Heung-Min Son was full of praise for our younger players after our 5-0 win at Southampton on Sunday.

Lucas Bergvall (18) made his first Premier League start after nine substitute appearances and was joined in the starting line-up at St Mary’s by fellow 18-year-old, Archie Gray. Later, Alfie Dorrington (19) became the latest Academy graduate to make his debut, **[proudly picking up Legacy Number 889](https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/2024/december/alfie-dorrington-assigned-legacy-number/)**. Joining Alfie off the bench at St Mary’s, Will Lankshear (19) for his second Premier League appearance and not forgetting that Djed Spence (24) was also making first Premier League start.

Djed certainly made an instant impact, as a determined run and perfectly-weighted pass set up James Maddison for the opener inside a minute. Sonny, Dejan Kulusevski and Pape Matar Sarr made it 4-0 inside 25 minutes, with Madders completing the scoring in first half added time.

Speaking on our _Review Show_, Sonny, **[who overtook Darren Anderton’s Premier League assist record for the Club](https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/2024/december/heung-min-son-breaks-spurs-premier-league-assist-record/)** with two more at St Mary’s, taking him to 68, was first asked about the importance of the performance and result. “In the circumstances we face at the moment, obviously it was very important,” he told us. “Credit to the guys, Archie, Lucas, Djed, who stepped up in a difficult moment. I think that was incredible. I’m very pleased to have these team-mates around me. Everyone played their part. I’m pleased, in such a tough moment, to get a result like this is very helpful.”

_How important was it to start so well?_

Sonny: “Yes, after as well, we didn’t want to stop. We wanted to score as many goals as possible. I had more chances, Madders had chances. This is us, you know. We want to attack, we want to score as many goals as possible. We played really good football in the first half, created so many chances and we should take a lot of good things from that. As I said, in a difficult moment, to get a result like this is very helpful.”

_Tells us about Djed and Lucas, making their first Premier League starts, and then Alfie Dorrington, another teenager from the Academy making his debut..._

Sonny: “They all deserve it. Archie, Lucas, they work so hard every day. Djed, it was tough for him, because he always worked hard but didn’t get his opportunities. Football is like this, you have to wait for your opportunity and then get it right, Djed did it brilliant. Madders, Deki, all scored, for me, we should always mention those playing behind us as well, Lucas, Archie, Radu, Djed, Destiny until he came off. It’s very good for me to see these young lads all taking responsibility as captain, it makes my job very easy. I’m very proud of them. I try to push them as hard as possible, in my role. I hope they can help the team again like they did today and I’m sure they have a very bright future.”
