Bayern Munich, fresh off of thumping Juventus 4-0, saw their good form continue with a 2-0 win in the Bundesliga against Turbine Potsdam, though the win was always expected. Today’s opponents were heading into the match with no wins and just 1 point from the first 11 matches. Nor did the former Champions League winners try to win the match, as they put 11 men behind the ball and hoped Bayern would not be able to break them down.
Breaking them down did, indeed, prove difficult for the Bavarians early on. Though there was one golden opportunity following a beautifully worked move that Alara Şehitler sliced wide from around the penalty, most of Bayern’s shots on goal up until the half hour mark were long range shots that the goalkeeper found easy to deal.
That changed in the 29th minute, when Carolin Simon lined up a free kick from about 25 yards that she managed to lash beautifully around the wall and into the back of the net. The goalkeeper perhaps could have done better, but Simon’s shot was so powerful it just slipped past her. This momentum carried on into the second half, as it would be Simon again who would lash the ball home after the ball bounced to her in the box.
With the two-goal advantage, the game really opened up for Bayern and they created multiple golden opportunities that the forwards unfortunately failed to put away. It was only due to this profligacy that the match ended with the Bavarians scoring “just” 2 goals. Meanwhile, Potsdam could get nothing going offensively, registering no shots of any kind.
This leaves Bayern on 29 points, level with Eintracht Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg at the top of the table. The team’s last game of the year will be in London against Arsenal FC, as the two teams take each other on to decide the winner of the Champions League group.
