Leverkusen confirm no new Wirtz deal despite reports

Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed that Florian Wirtz has not yet signed a new deal with the club despite reports this week.

Leverkusen are keen to tie Wirtz down to an improved contract amid interest in the player from Europe’s top clubs. The 21-year-old was named Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2023/24 after helping Leverkusen to a maiden title success and German double.

He has started the new season in similar form and has five goals in just six Champions League appearances for the German champions.

Reports this week emerged stating Wirtz has put pen to paper on a new deal, but Leverkusen have communicated that no agreement has been finalised. However, Xabi Alonso’s side are in ‘advanced talks’ over a potential extension as the club look to keep their coveted talent at the BayArena.

“Bayer 04 have had a very trusting and close relationship with Florian Wirtz and his family for years. Contractual matters are discussed exclusively between the Bayer 04 management and the Wirtz family,” Leverkusen told Sky Sports Germany.

“If anything changes in the current contractual situation, Bayer 04 will of course communicate that in agreement with the Wirtz family. We ask for your understanding that we will not comment further on this topic.”

Wirtz, who has been linked with Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid, is currently contracted until 2027.
